In February 2009, the EU Directive 2008/101/EC on the inclusion of aviation activities in the EU emissions trading scheme came into force. From 2012 onwards, CO2 allowances will be required for virtually all international and domestic flights landing at and departing from any airport in the EU. In the talk, an overview on the factors determining CO2 emissions in aviation will be presented. The effects of the inclusion of aviation into the EU ETS on airline costs, airfares and competition will be shown, based on an empirical model developed by DLR .
