Economics intersects with mental illness in three main ways: there are economic causes of mental illness, economic consequences, and economic arguments to support change. I will focus mainly on the consequences and arguments, summarising new evidence on links between youth mental health and adulthood experiences, and on the cost-effectiveness of interventions. I will then discuss how economic and other evidence can be used to support policy discussion and practice change. Moving from evidence to implementation, however, has its challenges.
