If you have a question about this talk, please contact Gareth Austin. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the first edition of the book that has most influenced the field that it helped to create: the economic history of West Africa. The session will start with a series of short oral contributions on A. G. (Tony) Hopkins’ classic, its content, influence on the study of West Africa; Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond; and the state of the field today. Tony will respond, and the discussion will then be opened to the floor. Details of participants will be added later. This talk is part of the Global Economic History Seminar series.
