he question of how suitable sharing mechanisms or means of peaceful co-existence can be found for Jerusalem – a Holy City to the three main monotheistic religions – has confounded generations of policymakers and would-be peace-makers. It is at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and affects the broader Middle Eastern crisis as well. Many have viewed it as simply too complex an obstacle to be overcome. Fresh thinking and lessons from history might offer possible solutions here.

The Forum on Geopolitics, in partnership with the Negotiation Task Force at Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, have initiated a strand of the ‘Westphalia for the Middle East’ project which seeks to apply some of the lessons from the historical experience of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) to the situation in Jerusalem. The invited discussants will assess how the ways in which Westphalia addressed confessional sharing mechanisms, issues of representation and legitimacy, as well as guarantee mechanisms, might be applied to Jerusalem.

Speakers include His Excellency Ambassador Hossam Zaki (Deputy Secretary General of the Arab League), Prof. Wendy Pullan, Prof. Menachem Klein, Rami Dajani, and Dr. Lena Oetzel.
