Hannah will present her PhD research (yet to be examined) which explores the decision to demolish or adapt existing buildings on large urban development projects (masterplan sites). Through professional interviews, focus groups and three case study investigations, she has explored what is currently considered when making these decisions and how two commonly cited benefits of adaptation, the retention of heritage and savings in embodied carbon are interpreted and translated into practice. Her research then proposes recommendations to stakeholders to reduce negative economic, environmental and social impacts when making these decisions.
