Automotive Control Using Non-Linear System Models With Uncertainty

Automotive systems are generally recognised as demonstrating strong non-linearities, which can make it challenging to develop a control solution for the full operating range. However, they can also contain significant uncertainties, in the form of vehicle to vehicle tolerances, environmental influences, sensor errors, or because key variables cannot be measured at all. Combined with the fact that like many energy systems, a powertrain shows non-minimum phase behaviour, this can lead to a range of highly challenging control problems, which often require highly dedicated control approaches. This presentation will cover three typical example problems: the control of the combustion process, the control of aftertreatment systems, and energy management in hybrid vehicles.
