DESCRIPTION:Astrophysical (supermassive) black holes (SMBHs) a
re ultimately characterised by mass and spin. Howe
 ver\, virtually all state-of-the-art hydrodynamica
l simulations of the assembly of galaxies neglect
the spin due to limitations in resolving the gas f
low in the proximity of the BH. Nonetheless\, spin
plays a crucial role in modulating both mass accr
etion and power emission\, driving jet feedback\,
and determining recoil velocity of coalescing SMBH
binaries in response to gravitational wave emissi
on.\nIn this talk\, I will describe the new result
s from the recent implementation of a new accretio
n model that accounts for spin evolution in hydrod
ynamical simulations of galactic nuclei. I will al
so discuss\nsome preliminary results on the dynami
cs and spin evolution in SMBH binaries surrounded
 by self-gravitating circumbinary discs.
