DESCRIPTION:The talk begins with a brief perspective on the hi
storical background to the subject of Tribology. I
n regard specifically to the development of wear t
heories\, for many years it was widely believed th
at the best way to reduce the wear of a surface wa
s to make it harder. This idea was implicit in one
of the guiding ‘laws’ of wear (Archard’s Wear Law
) which states that wear rate is directly proporti
onal to load and inversely proportional to hardnes
 s. In practice\, this ‘law’ doesn’t always hold tr
ue. What we now know is that (particularly for coa
ted surfaces) both the elastic modulus (E) and the
hardness (H) must be considered together when see
king to provide protection. In fact it is the rati
o H/E which gives us the best indicator of wear re
sistance\, especially for coatings. In this talk\,
the reasons for this are discussed and the implic
ations for the development of improved wear-resist
ant surfaces are outlined\, with examples of surfa
ces which take the optimisation of the H/E ratio a
s the goal. Examples of coatings which achieve thi
s are discussed\, including nanocomposite and nano
layered coatings. Mention is also made of so-calle
d ‘duplex’ coating systems\, which combine surface
treatments with coatings to gain maximum tribolog
 ical benefits.
