DESCRIPTION:Log schemes are an enlargement of the category of schemes that
was\nintroduced by Deligne\, Faltings\, Illlusie and Kato\, and has appli
cations to\nmoduli theory and deformation problems. Log schemes play a cen
tral role in\nthe Gross-Siebert program in mirror symmetry. In this talk I
will introduce\nlog schemes and then explain recent work joint with D. Ca
rchedi\, S.\nScherotzke\, and M. Talpo on various aspects of their geometr
 y. I will\ndiscuss a comparison result between two different ways of assoc
iating to a\nlog scheme its etale homotopy type\, respectively via root st
acks and the\nKato-Nakayama space. Our main result is a new categorified
excision result\nfor parabolic sheaves\, which relies on the technology of
  root stacks.\n
