DESCRIPTION:Linear groups (where we allow any field) which are
  also finitely generated are reasonably well behav
 ed in terms of abstract group theoretic properties
  (for instance being residually finite and satisfy
 ing the Tits alternative). However they need not b
 e good from a geometric point of view (eg they can
  have distorted infinite cyclic subgroups).\n\nHow
 ever we show that the finitely generated groups in
  the title do have much stronger properties in lin
 e with (one definition of) non positively curved g
 roups\, and we present applications.\n\n\n
