DESCRIPTION:In my talk I will discuss the brane realisation of the geometr
ical concept of "transverse slicing". I will consider a family of brane sy
stems in Type IIB superstring theory that preserve 8 supercharges. The low
energy dynamics of these branes are described by a 3d N=4 quantum field t
heory. The moduli space of the quantum field theory is the union of two hy
perkähler cones. "Slicing" one of the cones corresponds to performing the
Higgs mechanism in the quantum field theory. This has a natural descripti
on in terms of motions of branes in the string theory system. I will try t
o illustrate this process and use it to recover the characterisation of ni
lpotent orbits of classical Lie algebras given by Kraft and Procesi in the
  80's.
