DESCRIPTION:I will review the recent progress in realizing the inflationar
y paradigm in string theory\, focusing on D-brane inflation models in whic
h\, in contrast to standard single field slow-roll inflation\, fluctuation
s in the inflaton field can propagate at a speed significantly smaller tha
n the speed of light. This yields distinctive observable effects\, with st
rong implications for the amplitude of the gravitational wave background\,
non-Gaussianity of primordial perturbations\, and the shape of the primor
dial power spectrum of scalar perturbations. I will show how a combination
of microphysical and observational constraints (even with\ncurrent data)
strongly limits these models\, and hence the underlying string theory fram
 ework.
