DESCRIPTION:In this seminar I explore why detainees in police custody decl
ine free and\nindependent legal advice when it is offered to them on arriv
al at the police\nstation. To do this\, I draw on three kinds of data (par
ticipant-observation\,\ninterviews and custody records) collected in a pre
dominantly privatised\npolice custody area in the South-East of England. D
etainees' decisions to\ndecline legal advice were shaped by their percepti
ons of it (e.g. how long\nthey would have to wait to consult with a solici
tor). These perceptions were\nin turn affected by the practices of solicit
ors (e.g. only attending the\npolice station immediately prior to detainee
s' interviews) and the practices\nof police and private security staff (e.
 g. their use of informal\nconversations and negative stereotypes about sol
icitors). To conclude I\nexamine the implications of the research for pol
ice-solicitor relationships\,\nthe privatisation of the police custody pro
cess and importantly detainees'\naccess to justice.
