DESCRIPTION:Energy and Climate change - they're in the news\, they're\n'hu
ge'. Consumption is huge. Economic growth is huge. Our population\ndensity
is huge. CO2 pollution? Huge! Potential of renewable power?\nHuge! Nuclea
r power? That's huge too - and hugely costly to clean\nup... How to fix al
l these problems? Well\, if only everyone turned off\ntheir mobile phone c
hargers\, we'd be well on our way to a solution. Oh\nyes\, and let's remem
 ber to drive hydrogen-powered cars\, like Arnold\nSchwarzenegger. That'll
help. And don't forget magnetic levitation\,\nthat'll eliminate friction.
And if you must burn fossil fuels\, good\nold B.P. can neutralize your CO2
emissions if you pay them just 6\neuros per tonne.\n\nPoppycock.\n\n"Ever
 y little helps!"\n\nPoppycock!\n\nTo understand these 'huge' issues\, we n
eed numbers\, not\nadjectives. And we need numbers that are simple\, human
 -sized\, and\nmemorable. No millions\, no billions\, no Terawatt hours\, n
o\nexajoules. In this talk I'll present simple back-of-envelope\ncalculati
ons to see how our energy consumption stacks up compared with\nconceivable
  sustainable production.\n\n
