DESCRIPTION:Are glides just second-class versions of vowels? I
 f so\, why does the\nglide [y] sometimes become [k
] in varieties of Greek and Romance? Why\ndoes the
glide [w] sometimes become [m]? Moreover\, why ar
e glides\nskipped over in vowel harmony\, even tho
ugh they would seem to involve\nthe same articulat
ory gestures? In this talk\, based on Nevins &\nCh
itoran (2007)\, i will propose that glides are men
tally represented\nas neither vowels nor consonant
s\, have their own constriction degree\,\nand have
two Designated Articulatory organs. The interacti
on of the\nlogic of abstract binary featural repre
 sentations together with\nrepresentational notions
  such as constrastivity and representational\nsimp
lification yield this typology of puzzling pattern
