Chairman of LECG Europe. The details of his talk are as follows:\n \nTitle

 th May\nTime: 14:00 - 15:00\nLocation: Seminar Room A\, Institute for Manu
facturing\, Mill Lane\, Cambridge.\n \nIt would be very helpful if you cou
ld send me an email to let me know if you plan to attend this event so tha
t we can prepare enough handouts.\n \nAbstract:\nSome of the world’s mos
t influential businesses are catalysts – businesses that unleash the hid
den value that comes from getting different groups of customers together o
n the same platform and allowing them to interact. Think Lloyds of London\
, Hearst Newspapers\, Microsoft - or even the Mall of America – each ow
e their source of profits to a business model that makes it easy for buyer
s and sellers\, readers and advertisers\, developers and users and shopper
s and merchants to get together and do business. \n\nCatalyst Code is base
d on the discovery that many of the world’s most important businesses op
erate this way. In his presentation\, David Evans will describe the strate
gic principles used by innovators such as Google\, eBay\, and the New York
Stock Exchange (NYSE) to create value for their customers and shareholder
 s. Rooted in a new body of economic research\, he will explain how catalys
ts must defy traditional business wisdom to innovate and profit. For examp
le\, he will refute the “network effects” strategy that many of the la
te 90’s dotcomers followed to their demise. Instead\, drawing from new
research\, analysis and interviews with catalyst businesses\, Evans will e
xplain how catalysts must engineer business models\, and design and price
their products so that the platform is attractive for its customers to joi
n.\n \nBiography:\nDavid S. Evans is the founder of Market Platform Dynami
cs (MPD)\, a strategic consulting firm that helps catalysts develop profit
able product\, customer and business strategies\, and a leading global aut
hority on complex business strategy and business models. He is based in B
oston and London and advises companies in the United States\, Europe\, and
Asia.\n \nWith over 25 years of experience working with foremost organiza
tions in the payment card\, software\, telecommunications\, and digital me
dia businesses\, David consults regularly with companies on how to design
business models that unleash the hidden value associated with getting mult
iple customer groups together on the same platform. He does this by applyi
ng recent discoveries about what makes these complex companies profitable
and engaging boards and leadership teams of premier companies in the devel
opment of strategies rooted in these cutting-edge economic principles.\n \
nDavid\, along with his long time collaborator\, Dick Schmalensee\, are am
ong the early pioneers on the economic science that informs the design of
business models\, pricing and incentive structures and product features fo
r multi-sided businesses. This body of work is the underpinning of his la
test book Catalyst Code: The Secrets Behind the World’s Most Dynamic Com
panies.\n \nDavid is also considered a global authority in the field of co
mpetition policy. He chairs the global antitrust practice for LECG which
is a multi-national expert services firm. He is also Executive Director of
the Jevons Institute for Competition Law and Economics\, and Visiting Pro
fessor\, at the University College London and a Lecturer at the University
of Chicago Law School. He chairs the editorial board of Competition Poli
cy International.\n \nDavid has co-authored several books with Dick Schmal
ensee. Paying with Plastic: The Digital Revolution in Buying and Borrowing
(The MIT Press\, 2005) has been called the "definitive source on the paym
ent card industry." Most recently\, he was a co-author of Invisible Engin
es: How Software Platforms Drive Innovation and Transform Industries (The
MIT Press\, 2006)\, which tells the story of the most vibrant software eng
ines of all times\, and was recently awarded the American Publishing Assoc
 iation’s award for Best Business Book. \n \nDavid has B.A.\, M.A.\, and
 Ph.D. degrees\, all in economics\, from the University of Chicago.\n \nOrg
 anisers:\nThomas M. Bohné and Paul P. Hwang
