ic social psychology - Dr Charis Psaltis\, University of Cyprus\, Nicosia

DESCRIPTION:From the view of genetic social psychology the aim is to artic
ulate the\nmicrogenetic\, ontogenetic and sociogenetic processes of social
 \nrepresentation (Duveen and Lloyd\, 1990\; Psaltis\, 2015). These concern
s\nchanges in the social representations of people as a result of their so
cial\ninteraction with other people\, their developmental trajectories and
large\nscale historical changes or changes due to public debate. In my pr
esentation\nI will discuss the issue of internally displaced Greek Cypriot
children from\nthe war of 1974\, and the transformation of their views ab
out refugeehood and\nthe solution of the Cyprus problem in a situation of
protracted displacement\nfor the last 43 years based on recent quantitativ
e and qualitative findings\nfrom focus group discussions and a review of t
he available data from\nprevious work. I will explore the role of intergro
up contact between the two\ncommunities in Cyprus (Greek Cypriots and Turk
ish Cypriots) that was made\npossible in 2003 and the institutional polici
es that both enable and\nconstrain today the change of their representatio
ns and conflict\ntransformation. At the centre of this analysis is a criti
cal examination of\nthe unintended consequences of an official policy of "
I do not forget and I\nstruggle" [Den xehno kai agonizomai] and its conten
t relating to how it\norientates (or not) children towards cohabitation wi
th Turkish Cypriots\nthrough an examination of trauma and refugee identity
  as a burden or an\nempowering factor (see Hammack\, 2008).\n
