DESCRIPTION:Popa&#39\;s deformation/rigidity theory led to numerous classi
 fication and structure theorems for von Neumann algebras coming from group
 s and their actions on measure spaces. Negative curvature phenomena like h
 yperbolicity have played a key role in several of these results. I will fi
 rst give an introduction to von Neumann algebras and then present a number
  of rigidity theorems\, highlighting the usage of negative curvature type 
 concepts.<br>
