DESCRIPTION:The global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures relate periods of auto
 morphic forms and central values of automorphic L-functions. They generali
 se several celebrated results and are a beautiful application of the recen
 tly proven endoscopic classification of discrete automorphic representatio
 ns of classical groups. In my talk\, I will introduce the conjectures as w
 ell as their refinement proposed by Ichino-Ikeda. The case of unitary grou
 p will be the focus\, where Jacquet and Rallis proposed a relative trace f
 ormula approach and I will discuss the progress that this method has enabl
 ed.
