DESCRIPTION:Surfaces are typically in a state of flux at the atomic level\
, undergoing processes that cover orders of magnitude in time scale. I wil
l explain how the helium-3 surface spin echo experiment measures atomic-sc
ale processes down to the picosecond regime (one million million events pe
r second). As a recent and exciting application of the technique\, I will
present the first spin echo measurements of the diffusion of carbon on a m
etal surface during the growth of a single carbon layer (graphene).\n
