DESCRIPTION:In modern times Vikings have captured the popular imagination\
, but what made someone a ‘viking’ in the early medieval period? Were
all Scandinavians vikings and were all vikings Scandinavians? My PhD resea
rch focuses on two Scandinavian settlements in Britain and Ireland—the e
arldom of Orkney and the town of Dublin—both established quite early in
the period of Viking activity in the region. I am seeking to establish how
‘Scandinavian’ these settlements remained after centuries of intermar
riage\, trade and alliances with the local surrounding population.\n
