DESCRIPTION:In modern times Vikings have captured the popular
imagination\, but what made someone a ‘viking’ in
the early medieval period? Were all Scandinavians
vikings and were all vikings Scandinavians? My PhD
research focuses on two Scandinavian settlements
in Britain and Ireland—the earldom of Orkney and t
he town of Dublin—both established quite early in
the period of Viking activity in the region. I am
seeking to establish how ‘Scandinavian’ these sett
lements remained after centuries of intermarriage\
, trade and alliances with the local surrounding p
 opulation.\n
