DESCRIPTION:In this series of lectures\, I&#39\;ll give an introduction to
the modern theory of subfactors initiated by Vaughan Jones. We&#39\;ll be
gin with invariants for subfactors\, like the index\, the principal graph\
, and the standard invariant. We&#39\;ll then discuss Jones&#39\; planar a
lgebras as an elegant and powerful&nbsp\;tool for the construction and cla
ssification of subfactors. The standard invariant can also be seen as a un
itary 2-category\, and the categorical framework has been&nbsp\;very impor
tant for&nbsp\;recent results. Finally\, we&#39\;ll discuss the classifica
tion of &#39\;small&#39\;&nbsp\;examples from several viewpoints.
