ing health into old age - Professor Helen Birch\, University College Londo

DESCRIPTION:The recognition that the promotion of physical activity has on
e of the greatest potentials to achieve gains in health in older age highl
ights the importance of musculoskeletal fitness. However tendons\, a key c
omponent of the musculoskeletal system\, are particularly susceptible to a
ge-related tendon dysfunction and disease.\nOur research has focused on un
derstanding the mechanisms of age-related functional decline in tendon. Th
is presentation will cover age-related changes to the mechanical propertie
s of tendon and tendon sub-structures\, changes to cell metabolism and the
formation of advanced glycation end-product (AGE) crosslinks within the e
 xtracellular matrix of tendon.\n
