DESCRIPTION:Artilysin®s represent a novel\, promising class of antibacter
ials\, combining the lytic power of bacteriophage-encoded endolysins and o
uter membrane penetrating peptides. Selected peptides that locally destabi
lize the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria have been covalently fus
ed to endolysins that degrade the peptidoglcyan layer. These peptides prom
ote the transfer of the fused endolysin to the peptidoglycan layer across
the outer membrane. Time-lapse microscopy has shown that cells are killed
within seconds. The efficacy of Artilysin®s has been demonstrated in an i
n vitro keratinocyte infection model and in case studies of skin infection
