DESCRIPTION:Micro- and nano-structured membranes designed and
operated according to well-defined engineering cri
teria are able to sustain cellular specific functi
ons\, to provide adequate mass transfer of molecul
es throughout the cellular compartment and to supp
ly appropriate biomechanical stimuli of the develo
ping tissue. In this paper the author shows bioins
pired approaches such as those related to the use
of different tailor-made bioengineered membrane sy
stems using liver cells\, stem cells\, neuronal ce
lls\, and keratinocytes. Membrane bioreactors may
simulate the in vivo complex physiological environ
ment ensuring an adequate mass transfer of nutrien
ts and metabolites and the molecular and mechanica
l regulatory signals. Membrane bioreactors develop
ed to create a liver organotypic system and a ne
uronal network with defined functional\, geometric
and neuroanatomical features will be presented.
