DESCRIPTION:*Keynote Speakers: Professor Karen Coats (Illinois State Unive
 rsity) and Professor Rosalind Ridley (University of Cambridge)*\n\nLiterar
 y cognitive criticism (also known as cognitive poetics\, cognitive narrato
 logy\, literary affect theory\, embodied cognition\, along with a number o
 f other labels) has become a noticeable direction of international childre
 n's literature research\, visible in recent publications and conference pr
 esentations. The first Cambridge symposium in 2014 mapped existing researc
 h through talks by international scholars and posters by doctoral students
 . The second symposium in 2016 featured Peter Stockwell\, and focused on d
 octoral projects. While these events were by invitation\, we are opening t
 his symposium to broader participation.\n\nWe invite 200-word paper propos
 als for 20-minute papers on any aspect of cognitive approaches to children
 's and adolescent fiction\, as well as fiction portraying children and you
 ng people. We particularly encourage papers focused on multimodal texts\, 
 including visual media\, picturebooks\, comics\, and films. Possible topic
 s include\, but are not limited to:\n\n* schemas and scripts\n* theory of 
 mind/mind-modelling\n* empathy and emotions\n* empathy and ethics\n* memor
 y and identity\n* cognitive-affective engagement with place and space\n* c
 ognitive approaches to specific genres\n* cognitive approaches to ideology
 \, alterities and social justice\n* cognitive approaches to reading\, lite
 racy and education\n* empirical work on young people's engagement with fic
 tion\n\nWe will also consider proposals for panels (3-4 papers on a specif
 ic topic) and poster presentations\nof work-in-progress.\n\nThere will be 
 a workshop during part of the second day\, during which we will discuss su
 bmitted works that are in progress. Please indicate if you would like to b
 e considered for this.\n\nThe registration fee of £40 (£30 for students)
  will include lunches and refreshments.\n\n*Deadline for proposals:* Janua
