78671.jpeg!\n\nScience Makers is a monthly event to discuss and build low-
cost\, DIY and open hardware for science and education.\n\nThis month we'r
e looking at the hot topic of drones\, which are dropping in price and all
owing more and more researchers to consider aerial studies which would pre
viously have been prohibitively expensive. Drones are revolutionary in off
ering a fast and efficient way of collecting geological\, atmospheric and
wildlife data from above. Able to be equipped with on-board GPS navigation
\, sensory equipment\, and even autopilots\, many scientific groups are st
arting to catch on to the growing trend\, with drones fast becoming the la
test indispensable technology in many areas of science!\n\nHear from resea
rchers building and using drones for science and get hands-on in the after
noon working on a project.\n\n\n\n12:30 - Presentations and demos \n\nTom
Swinfield - Conservation Scientist at RSPB \n\nWorking within the heavily
degraded Harapan rainforest in Sumatra\, Tom works on finding cost-effecti
ve\, research-driven solutions to direct management of the forest. Part of
his work involves optimising survey techniques to collect the best data p
ossible\, for which he has regularly utilises drones.\n\nNigel Butcher - T
echnical Development Officer at RSPB\n\nNigel organises the design and dev
elopment of electronic devices for use in avian research undertaken by the
RSPB. He has a particular focus on remote monitoring equipment and has ex
perience working on drones for use in the field.\n\nDavid Coomes - Profess
or in the Department of Plant Sciences\, University of Cambridge \n\nDavid
leads a research group engaged in conserving biodiversity\, with a focus
on forest conservation and ecology. His group regularly utilises drone tec
hnology to measure carbon storage in forests.\n\n\n\n13:30 - Pizza (£4 su
 ggested donation)\n\n14:30 - Making! \n\nHands-on drone project TBC\n\nYou
are also welcome to work on your own projects.
