DESCRIPTION:Hume's argument concerning miracles and the well-k
nown gate-crasher \nparadox are both cases where p
eople seem reluctant to believe something\, \nor c
ourts seem reluctant to convict someone\, despite
extremely strong \nstatistical evidence that the t
hing is true or that the person is \nguilty. I pro
pose to account for this in terms of some simple i
deas from \nSignal Detection Theory. The upshot is
that Hume is still right\, but the \ncourts may s
 ometimes be wrong.
