DESCRIPTION:Mobile phones are transforming into trusted personal devices o
r mobile multimedia computers that have capabilities to interact with the
local environment via embedded short range radios\, sensors\, cameras\, an
d advanced audio functionality. At the same time\, these mobile computers
will function both as a server for global/local internet services and as a
client for global internet services. Thus mobile multimedia computers can
serve as gateways that connects local measured information and global int
ernet based services. The mobile multimedia computers create a versatile p
latform for sensing\, computing and secure communication. Sensors are an i
mportant enabling technology for user interface and several applications a
nd services in mobile communication. Implentation and architecture of sens
ors in the mobile multimedia computers are discussed. The latest technolog
ies for short range radios\, such as Wibree and RFID technologies\, are re
viewed. The consumer and enterprise applications and services based sensin
g and communication are presented. Finally\, Nokia's latest initiatives in
sensor network research\, Nokia Sensor Planet\, and in nanotechnologies a
 re discussed.
