 1st century is the stewardship of ageing infrastructure. Nowhere is this m
 ore apparent than in the networks of tunnels and pipelines that lie beneat
 h the major cities around the world. The talk will introduce research proj
 ects that bridge advances in modelling large-scale engineering infrastruct
 ure with advances in fibre optics\, micro electro mechanical sensors and w
 ireless sensor networks for monitoring underground infrastructure.
