DESCRIPTION:Radicalisation\, like terrorist action\, is subjec
t to constraints. Individuals are not equally susc
eptible to propensity change and human environment
s do not produce or sustain equally the conditions
that support the radicalisation process. To expla
in radicalisation\, we need to understand the mech
anisms which govern the interaction of factors of
 individual vulnerability\, exposure and emergence
(IVEE) at several levels of analysis. Such a syste
mist understanding of radicalisation\, as opposed
 to a more traditional risk-factor based outlook\,
may help explain why some populations in some envi
ronments are more vulnerable or resilient to radic
alisation at any given time. Findings from a numbe
r of research projects driven by the IVEE model ar
e used to illustrate this particular analytical ap
proach. Implications for intervention are discusse
 d.
