DESCRIPTION:Political extremism appears to be all around us. P
 opulists\, xenophobes and\, some might argue\, fas
 cists seem to be on the rise. Many trace the curre
 nt challenge to liberal representative democracy t
 o the legacy of the post-2008 financial crisis and
  economic scarcity\, recycling earlier interpretat
 ions of the rise of historic fascism. But what is 
 really driving support for political extremism in 
 the West today? What do we really know about those
  who vote for these parties\, including their back
 grounds and concerns? This lecture will examine th
 e drivers of support for contemporary forms of pol
 itical radicalism and extremism\, from the electio
 n of Donald Trump to the vote for Brexit in the Un
 ited Kingdom and to forthcoming elections in Franc
 e\, the Netherlands and Germany.\n\nBiography\n\nM
 atthew J. Goodwin is Professor of Politics at Ruth
 erford College\, University of Kent\, and Senior V
 isiting Fellow at Chatham House. His books include
  Revolt on the Right: Explaining Public Support fo
 r the Radical Right in Britain (published by Routl
 edge) and a forthcoming study of the Brexit vote w
