In this talk\, I will \;present a four-field mixed finite element method for the 2 D Biot&rsquo\;s consolidation model of poroelastic ity. The method is based on coupling two mixed fin ite element methods for each subproblem: the stand ard mixed finite element method for the flow subpr oblem and the Hellinger-Reissner formulation for t he mechanical subproblem. Optimal a-priori error e stimates are proved for both semi-discrete and ful ly discrete problems.

In solving t he coupled system\, the two subproblems can be sol ved either simultaneously in a fully coupled schem e or sequentially in a loosely coupled scheme. &nb sp\;I will present \;four iteratively coupled methods\, known as drained\, undrained\, fixed-str ain\, and fixed-stress splits\, in which the diffu sion operator is separated from the elasticity ope rator and the two subproblems are solved in a stag gered way while ensuring convergence of the soluti on. \;A-priori convergence results for each i terative coupling scheme will be proved and confir med numerically.
