DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the experiences of Africans captured by
the Royal Navy aboard suspected slave vessels in the Indian Ocean in the 1
9th century. Liberated Africans were consigned to ships\, harbors\, and m
issions and expected to learn the values of freedom and hard work through
contractual labor. They exposed a central tension of Victorian liberalism
and late abolitionism: a growing divergence between ideals of freedom and
equality.\n\nMatthew S. Hopper is Associate Professor of History at Cal Po
ly\, San Luis Obispo\, and author of Slaves of One Master: Globalization a
nd Slavery in Arabia in the Age of Empire (Yale University Press\, 2015).
