DESCRIPTION:This presentation will analyze the complexities in
elementary mathematics teaching\nthat arise from
having ambitious learning goals for students. Expe
cting students not\nonly to acquire knowledge but
to be able to understand why what they know makes\
nmathematical sense\, and also expecting them to b
e able to use what they know to\nsolve problems me
ans that the “content” of lessons cannot be descri
bed in a topicby-\ntopic framework. Expecting stud
ents to learn what mathematics is by doing it\nmea
ns that the teacher needs to not only elicit stude
nt thinking but orchestrate\nstudents’ exchanges w
ith one another and manage both errors and disagre
ements.\nExpecting all students to understand and
use knowledge and to do mathematics\nwith one anot
her means that the teacher needs to treat all stud
ents as mathematical\nsense-makers even as they ar
e struggling to figure things out. We will conside
r\nwhat this looks like in the classroom\, as well
as routines and practices that can\nsupport this
kind of teaching.\nContact
