DESCRIPTION:Petre\, M. (2004). How expert engineering teams use discipline
 s of innovation. Design Studies\, 25 (5)\, 477 - 493. (Design Studies Awar
d for Best Paper in 2004.)\n\nAvailable online from: http://dx.doi.org/10.
 1016/j.destud.2004.05.003\n\nOriginal abstract: Innovation happens deliber
ately more often than it does by inspiration. This paper describes discipl
ines applied by effective multi-disciplinary engineering firms in nurturin
g innovation in order to produce intellectual property in a variety of dom
ains\, from telecommunications to medical instruments. The report arises f
rom a series of in situ observations and interviews in 12 engineering cons
ultancies in the UK and US over 2 years. It describes strategies that expe
rt designers use to ‘get out of the box’ of familiar thinking\, to ide
ntify gaps in existing products\, and to go beyond ‘satisficing’. It d
escribes the supportive engineering culture in which these strategies are
embedded. Finally\, it identifies the characteristics which distinguish th
e highest-performing teams. \n\nRubric for the reading group: Everyone att
ending is expected to read the paper in advance. Please bring a copy with
you\, preferably annotated with interesting reflections. The format of dis
cussion will be a brief invited introduction/critique by two members of th
e group\, followed by general discussion and informal mixing.
