DESCRIPTION:I talk about attempts to analyse the connection between explan
 ations' abstractness and their explanatory power. I advocate a view accord
 ing to which abstract\, non-causal\, and 'mathematical' explanations have 
 much in common with counterfactual causal explanations. This opposes a rec
 ent trend (Lange\, Pincock\, etc.) to regard abstractions as explanatory i
 n a sui generis way.
