DESCRIPTION:Highly anisotropic single crystals demonstrate many unusual an
 d unique material properties. Under dynamic compression many materials sho
 w non-linear behaviour\, and separating the effect of anisotropy and the e
 ffect of non-linearity is an ongoing challenge in the field. The measureme
 nt of birefringence allows a semi-quantitative measure of anisotropy\, ind
 icating whether a material has deformed in line with linear elastic equati
 ons\, has become isotropic\, or a non linear anisotropic model is needed.
