  Irn-Bru\, and speaks English with a gentle Scottish lilt\, all of which m
 ight not be so unusual were it not for the fact that he is currently one o
 f the leading figures at the heart of German politics.\n\nBorn in Berlin t
 o a British father and a German mother\, Mr McAllister is the first dual G
 erman-British citizen to hold prominent public office. A lawyer by profess
 ion\, Mr McAllister served as Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 2010 unt
 il 2013 and has been Party Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU
 ) in Lower Saxony since 2008 and Member of the European Parliament since 2
 014. He was recently elected as Vice President of the European People’s 
 Party (EPP). Mr McAllister has often been described as a close confidant o
 f Angela Merkel\, acting as an intermediary between the German Chancellor 
 and the British Prime Minister David Cameron.\n\nThe Cambridge University 
 German Society proudly presents David McAllister as our final speaker of t
 his Michaelmas Term. The topic of his talk will be: ‘The UK and Germany 
 – Active Partners in Europe’. There will also be time for questions.\n
