DESCRIPTION:Decomposing images of galaxies into separate bulge and disk co
mponents has become a minor industry in studying galactic structure\, but
raises the question of whether such decompositions reflect an astrophysica
l distinction\, or whether they have just become convenient fitting functi
ons. With the advent of large-scale spectroscopic data\, such as that off
ered by the SDSS-IV MaNGA integral-field unit survey of 10\,000 nearby gal
axies\, we can now address this question. I will present the techniques t
hat we have been developing to exploit these observations in novel ways\,
and the first results that are starting to emerge from this rich data set.
