DESCRIPTION:Having causal beliefs makes us human and different from all ot
her animals. Children have such beliefs from a very early age. This evolve
d from tool-making\, and technology has driven human evolution. Causal bel
iefs gave rise to religion and belief in the paranormal\, as we cannot tol
erate not knowing the causes of events that affect our lives\, particularl
y in relation to health. The evidence for many of our beliefs is often ver
y poor\, and mental illness can provide useful insights. By contrast\, sci
entific beliefs are the most reliable.
