DESCRIPTION:Description\nBoth intimate partner violence (IPV) and suicidal
  behavior are significant public health concerns for women. This presentat
 ion discusses these two public health conditions\, as well as the link bet
 ween IPV and suicide attempts. Then\, attention is paid to the description
  of the Grady Nia Project\, which is an empowerment-based group interventi
 on designed to reduce those risk factors and enhance those protective fact
 ors associated with suicidal behavior among women in abusive partnerships.
  Data supporting the efficacy and effectiveness of the Grady Nia Project w
 ill be shared. Finally\, case vignettes will be used to illustrate the liv
 es and experiences of the women in the Grady Nia Project.\nWorkshop Object
 ives\nThis workshop will offer an evidence-based approach for conceptualiz
 ing\, assessing\, and treating women in abusive relationships who have att
 empted suicide. \nLearning Objectives\nThis workshop is designed to help y
 ou:\n1)	Understand the link between intimate partner violence (IPV) and su
 icidal behavior\n2)	Learn about the development of an intervention that fo
 cuses on reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors in this po
 pulation\n3)	Become familiar with the outcomes and mechanisms of change of
  an empowerment-based group intervention for this population\n\nNadine J. 
 Kaslow\, Ph.D.\, ABPP is a Professor with tenure\, Emory University School
  of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences\; Chief Psyc
 hologist\, Grady Health System\; and Vice Chair of the Department of Psych
 iatry and Behavioral Sciences. In 2012\, she received a Doctorate of Human
 e Letters from Pepperdine University. Past-President of the American Psych
 ological Association (APA)\, Dr. Kaslow is Past President of APA’s Divis
 ions of Clinical Psychology (12)\, Family Psychology (43)\, and Psychother
 apy (29)\, as well as the American Board of Clinical Psychology and the Am
 erican Board of Professional Psychology. She is the Former Chair and Board
  Member Emeritus of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Interns
 hip Centers (APPIC). She was a Primary Care Public Policy Fellow through t
 he United States Public Health Service\, a fellow of the Executive Leaders
 hip in Academic Medicine Program\, and a Fellow of the Woodruff Leadership
  Academy. She has received numerous awards including APA’s Distinguished
  Contributions for Education and Training Award\, an APA Presidential Cita
 tion for assisting displaced interns and postdoctoral fellows in the after
 math of Hurricane Katrina\, APPIC’s Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral
  Training\, a Heiser Award for her legislative advocacy efforts\, the Eliz
 abeth Hurlock Beckman Award for inspiring her junior colleagues to develop
  effective programs in the community\, the Grady Health Foundation’s Ins
 piring Mentor Award\, and Emory University’s Thomas Jefferson Award. The
  recipient of multiple federal and foundation grants\, she has published o
 ver 300 articles and three books. A member of Rosalynn Carter’s Mental H
 ealth Advisory Board\, she is a nationally recognized expert in suicide\, 
 intimate partner violence and child maltreatment\, depression in children 
 and adolescents\, posttraumatic stress disorder\, and psychology education
  and training. Dr. Kaslow is the psychologist for the Atlanta Ballet and a
  frequent media guest.
