DESCRIPTION: I will discuss "hierarchically hyperbolic spaces" and some of
their uses in geometric group theory. This class of spaces is designed t
o provide a common framework for studying the coarse geometry of a variety
of spaces and groups that exhibit features reminiscent of nonpositive/neg
ative curvature. Roughly\, a hierarchically hyperbolic space is one whose
geometry (up to quasi-isometry) can be recovered by examining maps from t
he space to a collection of Gromov-hyperbolic spaces. The motivating exam
ple is the mapping class group of a surface\, but other examples include T
eichmuller space (with any of the usual metrics)\, many CAT(0) cube comple
 xes\, and most 3-manifold groups.
