DESCRIPTION:The technology consultancies are a significant part of the UK 
 technology community and indeed can be considered to have played a key par
 t of the creation of the Cambridge Phenomenon. They seem to be less common
  in other innovation ecosystems (e.g. Boston and the Bay Area).  Why is th
 is?\n\nMore recently there has been a rapid growth in the work they do in 
 the area of medical devices\, including drug delivery technology.  What is
  driving this trend?\n\nIn this talk\, Dr Iain Simpson will provide an ove
 rview of the technology consultancy sector and some of its successes and w
 eaknesses.  He will then focus on the medical sector and particularly on h
 is own area of experience in drug delivery\, to provide some examples that
  explain why this is such a growing area for organisations like Cambridge 
 Consultants\, and how it fits with their technical capabilities.\n\nIain S
 impson is an Associate Director\, Drug Delivery\, Global Medical Technolog
 y Division at Cambridge Consultants.\n\nIain currently works on drug deliv
 ery in the Global Medical Technology Division at Cambridge Consultants\, a
  leading technology and product development organisation based in the UK a
 nd USA. He has a 30-year track record of multi-disciplinary technology and
  product development including business development\, project management a
 nd technology assessment in US and European markets\, the last 14 years of
  which has been gained in the life sciences sector in a consultancy enviro
 nment\, with a strong emphasis on drug delivery devices and bio-instrument
 ation. His experience includes parenteral\, pulmonary\, nasal drug deliver
 y as well as more invasive device technology in disease areas covering res
 piratory\, allergy\, diabetes\, autoimmune and oncology.\n\nIain has writt
 en and presented papers on a range of drug delivery topics including devel
 oping inhalers for children\, technology licensing\, improving device comp
 liance and usability. He has also chaired sessions on drug delivery at sev
 eral international conferences. Iain lectures on Drug Delivery to the Camb
 ridge University Masters in Bioscience Course.\n\nIain also has a wider in
 terest in the role of science and technology in the economy and in society
 . He is currently Chairman of the London-based R&D Society\, an organisati
 on focussed on making the UK a better environment for R&D.\n\nIain graduat
 ed from University College London with a First Class Honours Degree in Phy
 sics and a PhD in Experimental Solid State Physics. He also has an MBA in 
 Technology Management from the Open University.\n\nDate: Tuesday 16th June
