DESCRIPTION:The technology consultancies are a significant par
t of the UK technology community and indeed can be
considered to have played a key part of the creat
ion of the Cambridge Phenomenon. They seem to be l
ess common in other innovation ecosystems (e.g. Bo
ston and the Bay Area). Why is this?\n\nMore rece
ntly there has been a rapid growth in the work the
y do in the area of medical devices\, including dr
ug delivery technology. What is driving this tren
d?\n\nIn this talk\, Dr Iain Simpson will provide
an overview of the technology consultancy sector a
nd some of its successes and weaknesses. He will
then focus on the medical sector and particularly
on his own area of experience in drug delivery\, t
o provide some examples that explain why this is s
uch a growing area for organisations like Cambridg
e Consultants\, and how it fits with their technic
al capabilities.\n\nIain Simpson is an Associate D
irector\, Drug Delivery\, Global Medical Technolog
y Division at Cambridge Consultants.\n\nIain curre

project management and technology assessment in US
and European markets\, the last 14 years of which
has been gained in the life sciences sector in a
 consultancy environment\, with a strong emphasis o
 n drug delivery devices and bio-instrumentation. H
is experience includes parenteral\, pulmonary\, na
sal drug delivery as well as more invasive device
technology in disease areas covering respiratory\,
  allergy\, diabetes\, autoimmune and oncology.\n\n
Iain has written and presented papers on a range o
f drug delivery topics including developing inhale
rs for children\, technology licensing\, improving
device compliance and usability. He has also chai
red sessions on drug delivery at several internati
onal conferences. Iain lectures on Drug Delivery t
o the Cambridge University Masters in Bioscience C
ourse.\n\nIain also has a wider interest in the ro
le of science and technology in the economy and in
society. He is currently Chairman of the London-b
ased R&D Society\, an organisation focussed on mak
ing the UK a better environment for R&D.\n\nIain g
raduated from University College London with a Fir
st Class Honours Degree in Physics and a PhD in Ex
perimental Solid State Physics. He also has an MBA
in Technology Management from the Open University
