DESCRIPTION:In the last decade a double distrust concerning yo
uth has become apparent: a social disbelief in the
contributions that young people in the ‘lost gene
ration’ might have to offer to society\; and young
people’s own disbelief in their constantly-postpo
ned future. This mutual disbelief has become stron
ger since the economic downturn\, and urgently req
uires attention. In particular the lives of disen
franchised young people from border\, interior and
rural regions needs further research. This pres
entation will present findings from an ethnographi
c study carried out in 2010 - 2011 (and continued
 online) in a village\, Bemposta\, located in the P
ortuguese inlands\, close to the Spanish border.
It will reveal whether or not these young people a
re cooling their expectations\, or if they are cha
llenging their communities and geographies\, throu
gh proposing new youth cultures. What type of chal
lenges are these young people making? Are their co
mmunities capable of answering these challenges? W
hat do these communities expect from young people?
