DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: One of the most exciting developments in
research on pragmatics in the last twenty years h
as been the opening up of theoretical issues to ex
 perimental investigation. Alongside traditional ps
ycholinguistic work on the mechanisms underlying b
roadly pragmatic processes such as disambiguation\
, reference resolution\, the interpretation of ind
 irect speech acts\, implicatures\, metaphor\, iron
y\, etc.\, we find a growing body of experimental
work specifically designed to test competing theor
etical pragmatic accounts of these and other pragm
atic processes. Much of this work has involved col
 laboration among theoretical pragmatists/philosoph
ers and cognitive scientists. However\, collaborat
ive work of this type is still in its infancy\, an
d the coverage of theoretical issues remains rathe
r patchy. In this talk\, I will discuss a few case
s where collaboration between theoretical pragmati
sts and cognitive scientists has been of real bene
fit\, a few where the lack of collaboration has be
en a hindrance (in both directions)\, and a few wh
ich seem plausible candidates for future research.
I will end with some thoughts on how ‘pragmatics’
is understood in work of this type.\n\n\nNoveck\,
