DESCRIPTION:Two seemingly different theories\, one in algebra\, the other
in topology\, have long been observed to be strongly linked. These are th
e theories of Galois groups (and field extensions) and of fundamental grou
ps (and covering spaces). The aim of the talk is to explore this relation
along Grothendieck lines\, with a short word on modern applications.
