DESCRIPTION:Sperm actively propel themselves toward the egg an
d penetrate its vestments through the action of th
e beating flagellum. The energetic requirements of
flagellar beating\, and in particular the require
ments for energy to be supplied to the distal flag
ellum\, remain unresolved. We investigate these en
 ergetic requirements via elastohydrodynamic modell
ing and image analysis of human sperm\, with parti
cular reference to the role of the passive elastic
  structures of the flagellum.
