DESCRIPTION:Many mathematicians who have never worked in indus
try find it difficult to imagine life as an indust
rial mathematician. Many people in industry find i
t difficult to imagine what role a mathematician c
ould play in their organisation. Yet many highly e
ffective people in these companies are actually ma
thematicians quietly using advanced mathematics to
solve problems that those around them don't neces
sarily recognise as highly mathematical. I will de
scribe some of my experiences working in a large e
ngineering company\, illustrated with examples of
some of the many interesting problems where mathem
atics has played a vital role.
